Government-Issued Photo ID Required Upon Check-In

You will be required to show government-issued, picture identification that is compliant with the REAL ID Act of 2005. Normally, this will be a state-issued driver's license for U.S. Citizens and a passport for foreign nationals, but not all states are compliant with the REAL ID Act. Prior to your arrival at the meeting, you should check the Department of Homeland Security website, https://www.dhs.gov/real-id , to ensure your driver's license is compliant. If you are a Permanent Resident, please remember to bring your permanent residency card.

Facial Recognition to Expedite Frequent Visitor Access

Returning visitors who have previously registered, visited, or submitted a photograph can quickly and easily proceed through the existing DCC check-in process (e.g. providing a government issued ID and social security number, and having their photo taken) using an instantaneous, fully automated comparison with previous positive identification presented at DARPA.

A Few Notes on the Technology

  • The scanning technology relies on Amazon Web Services Rekognition, a commercial solution that compares a visitor's scan to existing data (photo images from the registration process), stored in a centralized Department of Defense database, with decentralized usage at DARPA's VWC to determine if visitors have already been validated. Validated data is stored in a CUI environment inaccessible to AWS.
  • The scanning process is NOT image capture, it's a comparison with previously existing data only.
  • If a visitor who has not previously been identified is seen by the scanning technology, their scan or comparion is immediately discarded.
  • No additional information about the visitor is being collected by the scanning technology.
  • If visitors have questions regarding this, they are encouraged to reach out to the VWC@darpa.mil
